Counterfactual History: Three Worries and Replies

چکیده
Abstract This article aims to shed light on what lies at the heart of skepticism towards counterfactual, alternative, or what-if history. On its face, counterfactual history gives historians and philosophers good reason worry. First, because pasts leave no traces, lack an important source empirical warrant. Second, rewriting historical events might unpredictably change past, inferences about have happened seem only weakly supported by generalizations actually did happen. Third, narratives appear especially vulnerable wishful thinking. Ultimately, through consideration epistemic values that regulate construction narratives, I marshal arguments against these objections defend legitimacy project. Still, hope show far from being a mere ‘parlor game’, raises deep provocative questions historians’ ability know our some which address here.

Counterfactual History and the History of Technology
Jack Brown's recent article in T&C opens up a new topic for historians of technology: the role of counterfactuals. As Brown notes, there are many possible varieties of "counterfactual history," and it's not entirely clear what they share in common. In this essay, I question the existence of "counterfactual history" while endorsing counterfactual reasoning in the history of technology. Such reas...

According to common judicial standard, judgment in favor of plaintiff should be made if and only if it is “more probable than not” that the defendant’s action was the cause for the plaintiff’s damage (or death). This paper provides formal semantics, based on structural models of counterfactuals, for the probability that event x was a necessary or sufficient cause (or both) of another event y. T...

One of the fundamental puzzles language learners must solve is the mapping of a string of words onto a particular (correct) syntactic structure. In this article, I examine the problem of how learners should resolve the ambiguity presented by a string that could have either a raising or a control structure. I provide both logical and empirical arguments against the view that children should be b...

This article shows that Error-Driven Constraint Demotion (EDCD), an error-driven learning algorithm proposed by Tesar (1995) for Prince and Smolensky’s (1993/2004) version of Optimality Theory, can fail to converge to a correct totally ranked hierarchy of constraints, unlike the earlier non-error-driven learning algorithms proposed by Tesar and Smolensky (1993). The cause of the problem is foun...
